Dr Natalie Coope
I am a clinical psychologist, experienced and accredited to support people to overcome a range of difficulties through psychological therapy. I have over a decade’s experience working in the NHS and, in my current role, co-lead a busy HIV and Sexual Health Psychology service in London. I specialise in supporting people to enhance their sexual wellbeing and communication, and to find ways that are meaningful for them to connect with others.
Alongside my NHS role, I also have a private practice in which I offer therapy to adult clients, and supervision and/or consultation to other professionals and teams. Speaking with a therapist for the first time can be daunting experience. One of my key priorities in offering you therapy would be for us to create a space together in which you feel able to talk about what is most important to you. I am keenly aware of the privilege of being invited into your personal world, and am often struck by our essential humanity when talking with clients about how we navigate the challenges and dilemmas of life.
I am trained in a number of psychological models and will draw on a range of ideas and techniques to find a way of working that fits for you and your therapy goals. I will be keen to understand what it is that you give value to; how you are connected, and would like to connect, with others; how you relate with the different aspects of yourself; and what it is that has sustained you through adversity up until now. I am interested in developing and populating with you less-heard stories and possibilities that fit with how you would most like to see yourself. I have particular experience working with people who have experienced social and/or political marginalisation. In all my work, I am keen to explore the impact of systemic power, privilege and societal discourses on our intersecting identities, as well as opportunities for resistance and preferred directions.
Some of the reasons people seek therapy with me are:
- Any difficulties associated with living with a sexual health condition such as HIV or herpes simplex, including adjusting to diagnosis, taking medication, experiences of stigma, talking with others about the condition, and navigating sex and relationships
- Sexual difficulties, such as painful sex (including vaginismus and vulvodynia), low sexual desire / libido, erection difficulties, ejaculation difficulties, and anorgasmia
- Reflecting upon and navigating relationships, including for gender, sexuality and/or relationally diverse people
- Rediscovering intimacy following trauma
- Significant life events, e.g. bereavement and loss, ending of relationships
- Life and role transitions, e.g. transition to parenthood, beginning and end of relationships, menopause, retirement
- Anxiety (including social anxiety, generalised anxiety, health anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks), stress, burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder and/or low mood
Psychological models I am trained in:
Systemic Therapy, Narrative Therapy (including Advanced Tree of Life), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TFCBT), and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET).
What to expect:
I offer a 90-minute initial consultation in person (in my therapy room in Brighton) or online. During this appointment I will ask you about your current difficulties as well as your hopes for therapy. I will also ask you some broader questions to help me understand more about your context and support needs. During that appointment, I will explain more about how I work, you can ask me questions, and we can think together about whether I might be a good fit for what you are looking for. If I believe that your needs would be better met by another therapist or service, my aim would be for us to think together about alternative options for you.
If, after your initial consultation, you decide to continue to have therapy sessions with me, I offer sessions in person (in Brighton) or online. Therapy sessions are 50 minutes each. You can decide to have as many or as few sessions as you wish and we can talk together at the beginning (and throughout) about how many sessions I would recommend based on your preferred outcomes.
Fees and working days:
- Online 90-minute initial consultation = £130
- Online 50-minute therapy session = £130
- In-person 90-minute initial consultation = £140
- In-person 50-minute therapy session = £140
My usual working days are Thursdays and Fridays.
